The facts on teenage smoking
Smoking is addictive, anyone that has already started smoking will tell you that and anyone who has ever tried giving up will tell you just how much you crave for a cigarette even after you have given up. On top of the addictiveness you will also gain stained fingers and teeth, a constant bad breath and will eventually (as you start to kill your insides) develop a cough. Oh your clothes will stink and your fitness levels will dramatically drop too.
There are also other health problems that have been linked with the effects of smoking, some of the most notable ones are various types of cancer, stomach ulcers and aged skin (especially hands and face).
Another thing is if you are smoking around other people then they too are smoking (called passive smoking) and they too could develop the problems listed above without ever lighting up a cigarette and that’s all thanks to you.
Cigarettes inside out
The inside of cigarettes are loaded with around 4000 different chemicals, around 10% of these chemicals are known by scientist as cancer causing, on top of the chemicals you have nicotine, tar and the tobacco itself.
The main ones include; acetone, ammonia, arsenic, nitro benzene and formalin. A lot of these chemicals can be found in products around the house. Acetone for example can be found in nail polish remover.
On top of these there are around 600 legal additives that tobacco companies can mix into cigarettes including, coffee extract, sugar, cocoa, menthol, oil from clove, and caramel.
These are added simply to make it taste better for you and to hide the bad stuff inside. The idea of most additives however is to leave you wanting more, but each time you have more your just inhaling more chemicals.
Giving up cigarettes
Giving up cigarettes is not easy, mainly because your addicted to nicotine and crave for more, plus the fact that cigarettes are filled with many additives you miss the rush or high that smoking gives you.
The nicotine cravings can be dealt with easily nowadays with many different nicotine replacement products such as gum, lozenges, inhalers and patches, however its beating the want to smoke thats hard as you’ll always find yourself in a situation where you would normally pull out a cigarette and light it.
One thing i have learnt from giving up is that you need to avoid situations where you may relapse, also you need to break your old habits, for e.g. if you only smoked (or smoke more) after doing certain things (like eating) or at certain times of the day (for most the morning is worst) then you need to work out a plan that will change what you will be doing at them times, for e.g. if you smoke after dinner, instead of eating your dinner and then going for a cigarette try eating your dinner and then washing up.
Also help and support is vital if your serious about giving up, a friend/partner that keeps check on how your doing and praises your efforts can do wonders to your giving up smoking cause.
Giving up together, say with a friend is also a confidence booster as you can do it together and help each other avoid cravings etc.
