Why Should I Recycle?

A lot of your everyday rubbish ends up in landfill, these are big holes in the ground which are filled with your unwanted rubbish, although a lot more people are recycling nowadays, a lot of what goes into landfill could easily be recycled.

The things that cannot be recycled but can be burned away (such as plastic) lets of poisonous chemicals into the air and anything that are not naturally biodegradable just ends up in a mountainous landfill. Things that can be recycled are sorted onto groups and then re-used to make new things, this means that we dont have to use new materials to make that product.
What Can Be Recycled?
- Some plastics
- Glass bottles and jars
- Carrier bags
- Paper/Cardboard (this includes things like cereal boxes and other packaging)
- Newspapers/Magazines
- Old birthday/Christmas cards
- Styrofoam
- Polystyrene
- *Glasses/Glasses Frames
- *Computer/Laptop parts and keyboards
- *Batteries
- *Mobile phones
- *TVs
- *Cars
* Items with a * indicate speciality recyclable items, these wont be collected at everyday recycling areas but can be recycled individually.
All that can be recycled, it usually says on the packaging whether or not it is recyclable. Remember that before you recycle any of the above that all bottles and jars are washed and cleaned and that things like papers are all clean and dry. Things that have been stained by food usually cannot be recycled. (example you spilt ketchup on the cardboard box)
Where to recycle
Some of you may be lucky enough to have recycling men come round each week that collect all your recycled rubbish, some of you may even live near recycling bins, if your one of the unlucky ones you will have to do some research into where your nearest recycling center is. For the best information you should contact your local council.
